The Mini-Odyssey
Prompt: Provide a summary of Homer’s Odyssey in 500 words, using verse that looks like dactylic hexameter.
O Muse! Tell me the story of the man of twists and turns,
Who sailed the wine-dark sea to travel homeward after the walls of Troy fell.
Odysseus was his name, and he faced dangers galore and varied,
But before, Muse, you sing about him, first tell me about his son,
Telemachus, who was embroiled in a domestic squabble concerning suitors,
Terrible houseguests who wanted his mother Penelope’s hand in marriage.
So he (Telemachus) ventured out to find out what happened to his dad.
Meanwhile, Odysseus was alone on an island with a horny nymph, Calypso.
The cunning warrior’s only goal was to return home after the Trojan War,
So he escaped and landed in the kingdom of the Phaecians,
Almost marrying the King’s daughter, charming man.
He told them stories of how he arrived on their island,
Staying with another horny nymph, Circe, for a year,
Taking his mighty purple-headed soldier into nightly battle.
Finally his men convinced him to go to Ithaca, his home.
And he told the Phaecians stories of the Cyclops, the Lotus Eaters, the Sirens,
A whirlpool and a monster of unpronounceable names,
And entering the Kingdom of the Dead,
Where warrior-like Achilles said, “dude, it sucks here bruh.”
Back on his journey, most of his men died because they disobeyed him:
They ate the cattle of the sun god, the one thing he told them not to do.
I mean, come on! It’s in the first ten lines of the poem!
Then whirligig Odysseus landed on the island of Calypso,
So now the story comes full circle - notice a pattern?
Finally to the shores of Ithaca, Odysseus returned
And when Dawn’s rose-coloured fingers lighted on the land of Ithaca,
Odysseus arrived in his native land asleep. Seriously.
The Phaeacians brought him there asleep and just left him there
With a bunch of treasure,
And they sailed away on the wine-dark sea.
When dumb-like-a-fox Odysseus awoke, he wandered his native land in rags,
In disguise, and no one recognized him, not even his loyal swineheard,
But his son Telemachus did, so yeah he’s back in the story now.
Eventually Odysseus arrived in the great hall, pretending to be a beggar,
And the suitors, the layabouts, drank his ruddy wine,
Ate his tasty pigs, and ravished his female slaves.
So Odysseus went into Beast Mode and,
After pulling a nifty shot with an arrow through axes,
Slaughtered them all with the help of Telemachus.
And blood-stained Odysseus went to the bedroom of his wife,
Goddess-like Penelope, who had not seen him for twenty years,
So she made him prove he was mighty Odysseus,
And he did so by using the ol’ nudge-nudge-wink-wink,
By which we mean that he told her the bed was carved out of an olive tree.
Then after one night of talking and other stuff,
Mighty Odysseus set out to find his father, Laertes,
Who was tending to his garden.
Finally, Odysseus was home, and with goddess Athena’s help,
He found peace.
